After some of the waves subsided, Vischer turned to the door, peering out through the miniature round window. He saw his father hanging lifeless on the pole, a spike through his chest. It all happened so fast. Nerin placed his hand on his friends’ arms; there were no words.

“I have to get him!” Vischer shouted hysterically; the echo of his twisted pain vibrated over the steps and where Nerissa cowered close to Mira. The young girl stripped the bandages off her toes and fingers, figuring that, if the waves hit her, she’d have a better chance using her webbed limbs.

“Not yet! The storm is not finished!” Nerin grabbed Vischer from behind, like a crane.

“Father!” Vischer turned the door knob frantically, but Nerin’s hand clasped his own, stopping him.

“We can’t. You open that door and the storm will swallow the lighthouse, drowning Mira, drowning Nerissa. Is that what you want?”

His poignant question lingered between the two of them, and Vischer could not speak. Mira watched him out of the foggy window, hypnotized by the destruction..His eyes fixed on his father, a few yards from him and he sobbed..

The storm hit again, exactly thirty seconds later. A forceful wave thrust over the banks, ripping up trees and bushes. As the water around Caddis’s body bloodied, the undercurrent rapidly spun and tore down the pole that held Caddis, washing him away for the last time.

“Father!” The gripping pain of Vischer’s grief combatted the callousness of the storm, telling everyone that Caddis was gone. Vischer whirled around dejectedly, his knees weakening as he fell to the floor wailing. Nerin hugged him and held him as sobs melted into Nerin’s skin. “He’s gone..” Vischer cried.

“He risked his life to save you. He would want you to stay alive. You will stay with us until the greystorm dissipates, and then we will all return to Liberty Shore together.”

Nodding, Vischer peeled himself away from the door and stepped onto the stairwell where Nerissa and Mira watched in horror. Nerin kept one hand on his back as they climbed the stairs. They reached the top with Mira and Nerissa close behind them.

“Is he?” Mira peeked upward, not wanting to hear the bad news.

“Yes. Gone.” Nerin answered. Two simple words. Two simple words that changed everything. Mira would no longer stay in Remnantville. Forget who she really was; she had to save the Mers, her family.

As Vischer grieved, tears hidden behind his large, masculine hands, he stood by the window of the lighthouse. The thick glass survived the storm, built to survive even bigger storms with the best material Commoners could find.

Mira whispered to Nerin in the corner.

“We will have to head back soon. This town is sure to be looking for us all over the place,” Mira insisted. “The King will not forgive me after hearing how I broke two Mers out of prison, entranced his subjects, and made a bed in his lighthouse.”

“Not to mention stealing his maps,” Nerin added with a smirk. Leave it to him to joke during a tense situation.
